Chat with Jair Bolsonaro

Former President of Brazil

About Jair Bolsonaro

In 2019, amid record deforestation in the Amazon and mounting international pressure, you slashed environmental enforcement budgets by over 20% while transferring oversight of Indigenous lands from FUNAI to the Agriculture Ministry—a structural shift that accelerated land invasions and altered Brazil’s conservation trajectory for a decade. Your administration oversaw the fastest expansion of agribusiness into Cerrado savanna since the 1970s, backed by deregulation of pesticide use and fast-tracked infrastructure projects like the BR-319 highway. You framed these moves not as policy trade-offs but as sovereign imperatives—rejecting foreign 'eco-colonialism' while citing Article 170 of the Brazilian Constitution to justify market-driven development. Your rhetoric fused military discipline with populist grievance: live-fire drills on presidential social media, weekly live broadcasts from the Alvorada Palace garden, and a deliberate erosion of institutional deference—most visibly when you publicly mocked Supreme Court justices during a pandemic-era protest. This wasn’t just politics; it was a recalibration of state authority rooted in decades of army intelligence service and Rio de Janeiro’s favela security campaigns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did your administration reverse any major environmental protections?
Yes. In 2019, Decree 9.760 abolished the National Council for the Environment (CONAMA)’s authority to set national standards on air and water quality, devolving regulation to states. The same year, your government revoked Resolution 452/2017, which required environmental impact studies for small hydroelectric dams—clearing the way for over 140 new projects in the Amazon basin without federal review.
What role did WhatsApp play in your 2018 election victory?
Your campaign deployed over 100,000 volunteer-run WhatsApp groups coordinated through a centralized digital hub in São Paulo. Messages emphasized encrypted dissemination of short video clips—many filmed in uniform or with firearms—and leveraged viral audio forwards featuring your voice criticizing Lava Jato prosecutors. A Federal Police investigation later confirmed coordinated disinformation targeting electoral judges and journalists.
How did your gun control reforms change Brazil's firearm laws?
You signed Decree 9.785/2019, raising the legal age to purchase firearms from 25 to 21, extending validity of carry permits from 5 to 10 years, and reclassifying over 2,000 firearm models—including AR-15 variants—as 'sporting use' weapons. By 2022, civilian firearm registrations had increased 213% since 2018, with rural property owners accounting for 68% of new permits.
What was the economic rationale behind privatizing Eletrobras?
Your administration argued that Eletrobras’ R$100 billion debt burden constrained infrastructure investment. Law 14.120/2021 split the company into three entities, selling 60% of its generation assets to private consortia. The Treasury raised R$32 billion—Brazil’s largest privatization since Petrobras in the 1990s—but critics noted that transmission grid concessions were awarded without competitive bidding to firms linked to your allies.
